What Is an RTA Eye Test in Dubai?
An RTA eye test is a vision assessment required for certain driving licence applications and renewals in Dubai. It is conducted by an optical centre approved by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The purpose of the examination is to evaluate whether your eyesight meets the applicable vision standards for driving safely.
During the assessment, an optical professional checks your ability to see clearly and determines whether corrective eyewear may be necessary to meet the required standards.
The test focuses on driving-related visual requirements and is different from a comprehensive eye examination, which may include broader assessments of eye health.
Who Needs an RTA Eye Test in Dubai?
An RTA eye test is generally required for several driving licence procedures.
1. New Driving Licence Applicants
If you're applying for your first driving licence in Dubai, you will generally need to complete an approved vision assessment as part of the application process.
2. Driving Licence Renewal
Drivers renewing their Dubai driving licence generally need an updated eye test to confirm that their vision meets the applicable requirements.
3. Drivers Who Wear Prescription Glasses or Contact Lenses
Wearing prescription eyewear does not automatically prevent you from obtaining or renewing a driving licence. Your eyesight can be assessed with appropriate correction, subject to RTA requirements.
4. Drivers Requiring an Updated Vision Assessment
In certain situations, an additional vision assessment may be required because of changes in eyesight, licence category, or individual licensing conditions.

How Long Does an RTA Eye Test Take?
An RTA eye test is typically a quick procedure.
The vision assessment itself may take approximately 5–10 minutes, although the overall visit can take longer depending on customer volume, additional testing needs, and electronic processing.
For a smoother experience, contact your preferred optical centre to confirm service availability before visiting.
Can You Take an RTA Eye Test While Wearing Glasses?
Yes. Drivers who use prescription eyeglasses can generally undergo an RTA vision assessment while wearing their corrective lenses.
The examination determines whether your eyesight meets the applicable driving standards with the permitted correction.
If corrective eyewear is required for driving, this may be reflected in your driving licence conditions.
At Trivision Optical, our team can also assist customers who need updated prescription eyeglasses and suitable lenses for everyday use.
What Happens If You Don't Pass the RTA Eye Test?
If your vision does not meet the applicable standard, the optical professional may recommend additional evaluation or suitable vision correction.
For some customers, updated prescription glasses may improve visual clarity. Others may require further examination by an appropriate eye care professional.
The outcome depends on your individual vision assessment and the relevant RTA requirements.
RTA Eye Test vs Regular Eye Examination
Although both assessments involve checking eyesight, they serve different purposes.
|
RTA Eye Test |
Regular Eye Examination |
|---|---|
|
Evaluates driving-related vision requirements |
Assesses vision and potentially broader eye health |
|
Used for applicable driving licence procedures |
Used for routine vision care and prescription needs |
|
Conducted at an RTA-approved centre |
Conducted by an appropriate eye care professional |
|

Even if you have recently passed an RTA eye test, regular comprehensive eye examinations remain important for maintaining good vision and identifying potential eye health concerns.
